I’ve been into astrology since I was a teenager reading horoscope columns I definitely shouldn’t have taken as seriously as I did. I still check my chart more than I’ll admit out loud, and I will absolutely blame Mercury retrograde before I blame myself. So when I started digging around for free amigurumi patterns for zodiac signs — actual cute little stuffed crab and lion plushies, not just symbol squares — I ended up with a whole list, and figured I’d share it before I lose the links myself.

I’m a Cancer, for the record. Ruled by the crab, symbolized by two curled lines that look exactly like a 69, and named after a disease that nobody wants to hear their doctor say. It’s not the most flattering package the zodiac had to offer. But I’ve made my peace with it — the crab is grumpy for a reason (mostly boundaries), and at least our symbol is objectively the funniest one out there. I’ll take it.

Below you’ll find all 12 signs, in calendar order, each with the personality behind the animal, a link to a genuinely free amigurumi pattern, and a spot for a photo. I pulled these from a handful of independent designers who post full, real, no-paywall patterns — not roundup sites that just link out to Etsy. Skill levels vary a bit sign to sign, but all of them are beginner-to-intermediate amigurumi: single crochet, basic shaping, some hand-sewing.

♈ Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Aries opens the zodiac year, and it shows — bold, impatient, first to raise a hand before the question is even finished. Fire sign, ruled by Mars, symbolized by the ram.

Pattern: Ram Amigurumi Free Pattern — a cloud-soft little ram with curled horns, worked in cream and beige. Fully free, full instructions on the page.

♉ Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus doesn’t rush anything, including this pattern. Earth sign, ruled by Venus, represented by the bull — stubborn, sensual, allergic to being told what to do.

Pattern: Bull Amigurumi Free Pattern — a sturdy little bull amigurumi with a proper set of horns and a tiny tail tassel.

♊ Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Gemini gets a bad rap for being “two-faced,” but really it’s just a sign that refuses to be bored — so a single plushie was never going to cut it.

Pattern: Patti & Pete, The Twin Bears — a free PDF pattern for a matching pair of teddy bears, which felt like the only honest option for a sign literally represented by twins.

♋ Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

And here’s mine. Water sign, ruled by the Moon, symbolized by the crab — which, fine, is a little on the nose for a sign that’s soft on the inside and armored on the outside. We’re nurturing until we’re not, and then we retreat sideways into a shell for a while. It happens.

Pattern: Claudio the No-Sew Crochet Crab — the pattern that started this whole post. Comes in mini and jumbo sizes, no sewing required, and is honestly the most accurate self-portrait a crochet hook has ever produced.

♌ Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Leo runs on warmth and attention, in that order. Fire sign, ruled by the Sun, symbolized by the lion — dramatic, generous, allergic to being ignored.

Pattern: Landon the Lion — an advanced-beginner amigurumi lion with a surprisingly simple mane, so you get the drama without the difficulty.

♍ Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Virgo will finish this project before you’ve unwound the skein. Earth sign, ruled by Mercury, precise, useful, quietly judging your stitch count. There’s no universal “Virgo animal,” so I went with the creature that best matches the energy: sharp-eyed and a little too observant.

Pattern: Free Owl Amigurumi Crochet Pattern — a beginner-friendly keychain-sized owl, quick enough to actually finish (which, let’s be honest, is very Virgo of it).

♎ Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Libra can’t pick a yarn color and honestly, same. Air sign, ruled by Venus, symbolized by the scales — diplomatic, aesthetic, will ask three friends before buying the hook. There’s no scales plushie worth making, so I leaned into the other Libra signature: beauty and balance.

Pattern: Free Butterfly Crochet Pattern — a small, symmetrical, genuinely pretty amigurumi that fits a sign obsessed with aesthetics.

♏ Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Scorpio isn’t “mysterious” for fun, it’s a defense mechanism, and I respect it. Water sign, ruled by Pluto (or Mars, depending who you ask), symbolized by the scorpion.

Pattern: Free Crochet Scorpion Pattern — curved claws, a coiled tail, and just enough hand-sewing to keep things interesting. One color of yarn, surprisingly detailed result.

♐ Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Sagittarius will start this pattern on a whim and finish it somewhere unexpected. Fire sign, ruled by Jupiter, symbolized by the archer — technically a centaur, but since a decent free centaur pattern doesn’t really exist, I went with the horse half.

Pattern: Little Amigurumi Horse — a quick, couple-hours make, with instructions included for turning it into a heart-winged pegasus if you’re feeling extra.

♑ Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn treats a hobby like a career, which is either admirable or exhausting depending on your sign. Earth sign, ruled by Saturn, symbolized by the sea-goat.

Pattern: Crocheting an Amigurumi Goat — curly beard, fine horns, detailed feet. Beginner-friendly and quicker than it looks, which is very on-brand for an efficient Capricorn.

♒ Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius will crochet this pattern and then explain to you why the pattern itself is outdated. Air sign, ruled by Uranus, symbolized by the water bearer — independent, a little contrarian, weirdly ahead of the curve. No great “water bearer” plushie exists, so I went with something else that lives in water and has way too many limbs for its own good.

Pattern: Ozzy Octopus, No-Sew Amigurumi — basic stitches, no sewing, endlessly personality-having curled tentacles.

♓ Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Pisces closes out the zodiac somewhere between a daydream and a nap. Water sign, ruled by Neptune, symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, which tracks.

Pattern: Finley the Fish — a quick, beginner-friendly goldfish amigurumi. Make one for yourself and one swimming the other way if you want to get literal about it.

A Note on the Signs Without a Clean Animal Match

A few signs — Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius — aren’t represented by a single, obvious, crochet-able animal (twins, a maiden, scales, a centaur, a water bearer). For those, I picked the closest free amigurumi that matches the sign’s actual symbolism or personality rather than forcing something literal and clunky. If you’ve got a favorite alternative for any of these, I’d genuinely love to hear it.

Whether you’re making your own sign, a gift for a friend’s birthday, or working through the whole zodiac one plushie at a time — I’d love to see how yours turns out. Tag me if you post it.
